CARA STRETCHED her arms above her head. “I’m hungry.”

“I wonder why,” Wes muttered, his face buried in the pillow. He turned his head, and they found themselves almost nose to nose. An unmistakable look of affection and tenderness passed through his eyes.

Should she say something about how she felt? Whatever that was. Should she compliment him? Tease him?

The moment passed, and he rolled off the bed, glancing around. “I have pants somewhere.”

Groggy and confused, Cara sat up, then slid to the edge of the bed. “In the kitchen, I think.”

He laid his hands on her shoulders. “How about I heat everything up and bring it in here?”

“Eat in bed?”

“Sure.” He kissed her forehead, then turned, walking toward the door.

She tilted her head sideways to watch him stride, bare-assed, from the room. How in the world was she going to concentrate on arson evidence and questioning suspects, knowing all that was under his clothes?

Shaking aside the image, she forced her body to move toward the bathroom. She hopped in the shower, reveling in the spray of hot, streaming water over her skin. Afterwards, as she slid into her robe, she decided the jury needed further deliberation on the subject of uncontrollable urges. She couldn’t deny sex was a necessary tension reliever, a reminder not to take life so seriously, and—when one was doing it with Wes Kimball—the most pleasurable way on earth to exercise. But her stomach felt all squishy, and her heart contracted whenever she looked into his eyes. The moments their bodies had been connected, she’d felt as if every part of her—heart and soul—were also part of him.

The intimacy was emotional, as well as physical. And she wasn’t sure if that was a good thing.

She was here temporarily. Her career was her main focus in her life. They both liked to control things. They both had strong opinions. They’d even laid out a time limit for this relationship.

As she opened the bathroom door, she considered deeper ramifications. What if she embarrassed herself or the state arson department, or—worse—lost her focus on this case and someone else lost their life….

The low, smooth sounds of Toni Braxton’s unique R&B voice wound their way into the room. He’d found her CD player.

“I like your taste in music,” Wes said as he appeared in the doorway.

He’d put on his jeans and nothing else. She swallowed hard. She’d practically attacked the man twice. She really needed to find some restraint where he was concerned.

She clenched her hands together behind her. “Thanks.”

He turned, extending his hand to the bed behind him. “How about some dinner?”

Glancing past him, she noticed he’d pulled the comforter over the sheets and laid steaming plates of food, utensils and salad bowls on the bed. The smell of cheese and rich tomato sauce had her nearly falling to her knees. “Yum.”

He snaked his arm around her waist, pulling her against his body. “Is that for me or the food?”

She glanced up at him. Again, she had to fight for her breath as his gaze met hers.
